WOLVES battled their way to an extra-time victory against League Two side Accrington in their Carling Cup first round clash.

Mick McCarthy's side had trailed to Paul Mullin's first-half strike but Chris Iwelumo scored twice and after Ian Craney had levelled, Mark Davies got the extra-time winner for Wolves.

Stanley threatened in the opening minute when 18-year-old winger Robert Grant lofted the ball to Ian Craney but the midfielder failed to make full contact with and it floated harmlessly over Wayne Hennessey's bar.

The early scare sparked Wolves into life and Iwelumo thought he had produced the opener only to see his effort ruled offside.

Michael Gray then went close with a 25-yard effort which Kenny Arthur could only push out of play. The resulting corner, swung in by Daniel Jones, caught Arthur off-guard and he could only parry it straight to George Elokobi who drilled his shot straight across goal.

But it was Accrington who took the lead three minutes before the half-time whistle when a well-placed through-ball from Peter Cavanagh fell to on-loan forward Jamie Clarke whose thunderous effort ricocheted off Hennessey's crossbar and Mullin reacted quickest with a diving header.

After the break a good through ball by Karl Henry created an opening for Wolves new-boy Sam Vokes who beat the offside trap and it was only a well-timed tackle from Reds defender Phil Edwards that kept the scores level.

McCarthy brought on Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Andy Keogh, and the latter could have brought the scores level with his first touch of the ball when he latched onto a Vokes' cross but Arthur was aware of the danger and expertly saved from close-range.

It was forward Iwelumo who brought the sides level 13 minutes from time when he found himself in acres of space in the Reds penalty to thunder a close-range shot beyond the outreaching arms of Arthur which did enough to take the two sides to extra-time.

Wolves took the lead for the first time in the game midway through the first period of extra-time when Iwelumo drilled home but just one minute later Stanley were back level when Leam Richardson laid the ball to Craney who beat the offside trap to coolly slot the ball beyond Hennessey.

But just as the Reds dreamed of continuing to the second round, a minute into the second period substitute Davies latched onto an Iwelumo cross to place his shot into the bottom right hand corner.

Stanley's Phil Edwards could have brought the sides level once again with five minutes to go but he sliced his shot inches wide of the Wolves' left-hand post.

Red's defender Robbie Williams was sent off in the last minute of extra-time for a last-ditch tackle on Ebanks-Blake but it came to nothing as Wolves secured victory.
