Mick McCarthy hails "awesome" Chris Iwelumo
MICK McCarthy described Wolves striker Chris Iwelumo's performance as "awesome" as Wanderers eventually saw off Accrington Stanley to reach the second round of the Carling Cup on Tuesday night.
The Wolves manger was not only delighted with his new signing's two-goal contribution but was glowing with praise for the 30-year-old Scotland international.
"I thought Chris was awesome," he said.
"He had a great game, besides his goals. His all-round centre-forward play was terrific.
"When you are a centre forward your job is to make sure the centre halves don't have it easy, hold the ball up, run into channels, bring other players into play and to score goals. Chris did all that and came back to defend corner kicks."
McCarthy was also pleased with 20-year-old winger Mark Davies, who set up Iwelumo's second goal and scored the winner with a cool finish after being a substitute in extra time.
The former youth team product missed most of the 2006-07 season because of a cartilage problem before being absent throughout the last campaign because of a shoulder injury.
